  Colorless liquid. There is a strong pungent odor. The density is 0.83. Refractive index 1.430. Melting point -16 ºC. Boiling point is196ºC. Not miscible with water, but miscible with ethanol, ether and chloroform.




Application
 
  Used in the preparation of fragrances and cosmetics, and as a solvent, anti-foaming agent, plasticizer, antifreeze, lubricant additives, etc. It is a by-product of the production of lauric acid from coconut oil. It can also be obtained by  hydrolyzing and separating ethylene after catalytically controlled polymerization.
